Scorpio Rising (1963), Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969), Lucifer Rising (1972–1980), Nigredo / Albedo / Rubedo. *

Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969),

(IN MEMORIAM. KENNETH ANGER. FILMMAKER 1947–1967 / Village Voice).

He was always just a concept, you guys.

Bobby, why are you in prison?

BOBBY, BOBBY! CAN YOU WRITE LETTERS FROM PRISON?
In the end, I took a tape recorder in to Bobby in prison. He rounded up 12 other murderers who used to be musicians – there’s a lot of musicians in prison who got mixed up with selling drugs, but I mean they still could play music. So I recorded Bobby playing with the “all-killer orchestra”. Bobby said he was going to call his band the Powerhouse of Oz. I said: You can’t, because Oz means goat in Hebrew – though you’re not violating the L Frank Baum Oz book copyright, because Baum was a secret occultist and the Oz books are full of secret little jokes for people that understand magic.
Do what thou wilt

Blood Between Metaphor and Fact
One of the more interesting manifestations of human free will is the voluntary act of thinking in a vacuum. The kind of thinking that can uproot your thoughts and offer new ideas about God… or at least about another truth… or at least make things colorful and unpredictable… or at least give them a good soundtrack.
Lost in Icons
Magick Lantern Cycle is a series of avant-garde, occult-inspired short films by Kenneth Anger, made between the 1940s and the 1980s. His work is nonlinear, magical, and full of peculiar lines of contrast. It resembles sharp collages crammed with archetypes and entire chests of proto-spells. Anger places ritual under the microscope of Aleister Crowley and was a member of the Ordo Templi Orientis, deeply believing in the idea of individual will and the inner divinity of the human being. A fundamental image of this idea is Lucifer himself — the first to straighten his spine against injustice and limitation, the first to follow his own light toward elevation and knowledge. This reading of the religious narrative leads to the conclusion that Lucifer is, in fact, the guide of the new age, with the Fall romantically understood as the liberation of light into matter. This idea marked Anger’s entire artistic path (and, incidentally, his chest, where he has a gigantic LUCIFER tattoo), whose career began during the mass formation of cults in the United States, the era of counterculture and psychedelia, and homosexuality that was still illegal. His work generally concerns itself with the border between the sacred and the erotic, mythology and pop culture, the divine and the destructive.
Within the Magick Lantern Cycle, three of Anger’s films are particularly central: Scorpio Rising (1963), Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969), and Lucifer Rising (1972–1980), which form his Nigredo / Albedo / Rubedo.
With the first, Scorpio Rising (1963), he attempts to draw the process of civilization’s decay and the reasons for its destruction. More realistic, fast, and cold, it creates a sense of urgent necessity for introducing different ways of living and suggests that they are not far away from us. Six years later came Invocation of My Demon Brother (1969), composed by Mick Jagger, though we will get to the musical fiasco of these films in a moment. In this film, Anger manages to push forward the line of transformation, the dissolution of the image, and the sense of freedom swelling beneath the surface. Some of its frames also appear in his next film. Interestingly, he always plays the Magus in his own works — the one who provokes, awakens, and acts as a conduit for light. He himself has said that, first and foremost, he considers himself a magician, and only second a filmmaker, and he has repeatedly suggested that these are not entirely films, but rituals.
An interesting fact worth mentioning is that Anger once published news of his own death. He intended to generate interest in his films before their premieres and to send a message that independent filmmakers did not have enough funding to express themselves (IN MEMORIAM. KENNETH ANGER. FILMMAKER 1947–1967 / Village Voice).
A stunt that was not particularly successful — at least not as successful as Aleister Crowley’s.
The final and most labor-intensive film is Lucifer Rising (1972–1980). Now, this really is a ritual. Not so much because the film itself is overflowing with value — quite the opposite. I would say it is the weakest link of the three films in the cycle. Compared to its predecessors, it looks rough-hewn and strangely costumey. Its job is to close the circle and usher in the new age. This happens through a somewhat imagination-starved hallucination led by Egyptian deities, a transition from matriarchy to patriarchy, portraits of Crowley, and hatching crocodiles.
What I liked most, perhaps, was the presence of the enormous mirror bearing the inscription BASS & CO’S PALE ALE. With its golden letters, it reminded me of the work of the artist Aron Roth and made me think that everything connected to people carries the shine of their materiality and absurdity — and that Anger has allowed himself one final dance with human possessions.
In the end, Lucifer appears as a neon flying saucer against the backdrop of Egyptian wonders. He was always just a concept, you guys. The film’s rituality is conveyed along a highly cartoonish trajectory, resembling a comic book more than the spiritual experience it claims to be. The film never manages to launch itself into the cosmic orbit assigned to it, instead remaining on earth as an image that exists only in the mind.
Bobby, why are you in prison?
What actually becomes the ritual — and makes the film a masterpiece — is the story of its making and its participants. Kenneth Anger begins searching for his Lucifer and gives this name to men who stay with him for several days in his house (William Westerfeld House / Russian Embassy, San Francisco County). No one manages to hold his attention for very long. The story told about Anger’s meeting with Bobby Beausoleil goes something like this.
At the end of 1966, Anger finds himself at the Invisible Circus, an event organized by The Diggers and The Bay Area Sexual Freedom League at Glide Memorial Church. They had invited Beausoleil’s group, Orkustra, to provide musical accompaniment for a troupe of naked white dancers. Anger first sees Beausoleil playing guitar while licking a woman’s breasts. He immediately approaches him and offers him a role in the film.
Beausoleil agrees, but the two have considerable disagreements. Bobby is domineering and attempts to direct. The following two years are crucial: Bobby joins the family of Charles Manson and murders a man, Gary Hinman, whose killing becomes a model and ideological framework for the subsequent so-called Tate–LaBianca revolutionary murders. Bobby Beausoleil is arrested and initially sentenced to death, later having the sentence commuted to life imprisonment. This is important.
Anger continues attempting to make the film, and in 1970 receives funding by lying that he is going to Egypt to make a documentary — once again because he had been there before and had managed to film Black Saturday (Cairo Fire / Black Saturday, January 26, 1952).
While attempting to shoot in Egypt, he discovers that Marianne Faithfull, the star of the film who plays the goddess Lilith, is addicted to heroin. In a 2013 interview, Anger said that she had had the… audacity to carry a little heroin in her makeup box underneath the face powder. If she had been arrested or discovered, we would all have been shot — that was the punishment then. I think all drugs are crutches — you don’t need them to be creative…
Anger still has no music and this film is one hell of a carousel. Then he meets Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin at an auction, where both men are bidding on a Crowley souvenir. Page invites Anger to stay at his house, which had also once belonged to Crowley (you can feel where this is going), and the director manages to persuade him to compose the film’s music. Anger even announces the collaboration publicly in 1972 and screens part of the film during a public appearance at a university. In October 1976, Anger falls out with Page’s wife, Charlotte, who throws him out of their London home. Anger holds a press conference in which he announces that Page is a heroin addict and a musician who has already dried up.
Page’s soundtrack is much more religious and literal. Its weight provokes anxiety. You can hear a tubular echo and a growing paranoia that is absent from the film.
BOBBY, BOBBY! CAN YOU WRITE LETTERS FROM PRISON?
After learning that Page has been removed from the project, Beausoleil writes to Anger from TRACY (DVI) prison in California, offering to compose the soundtrack for Lucifer Rising, as the two had originally agreed almost a decade earlier. With the help of a prison teacher, he manages to obtain the necessary musical instruments and recording equipment and forms the Freedom Orchestra together with other inmates. Anger continues to see Lucifer and his light in Bobby. Apparently Crowley was right when he said that from the lead of sin comes the gold of consciousness. Indeed, I liked Bobby Beausoleil’s soundtrack more.
His arpeggiated excesses genuinely create the atmosphere of flowing light. The music manages to hypnotize without becoming boring. This is what Anger says about the recording process in prison:
The aesthetics of an ideology centered around turning the human being into something godlike through self-knowledge and will make for an interesting and dangerous game. Blood is never merely a metaphor, and sometimes murderers play the soundtrack to a film about Lucifer without there being anything wrong with that.
Alchemy processes: Nigredo (blackness) is the stage of decomposition and chaos; Albedo (whiteness) is the stage of purification and renewal; and Rubedo (redness) is the stage of bringing opposites together and achieving perfection.
